CONSTRUCTION: ANCILLARY TASK 2

Also for our second ancillary task we have decided to make a magazine advertisement for the didgpak. This is because we have experience with magazines due to our coursework last year and would find this easy to relate to as we have come across many during our research. Here are some examples of music DVD releases we have found in music magazines:
CONSTRUCTION: ANCILLARY TASK 1
We deliberately looked at CD and DVD covers from the Indie/Electra pop genre because this is the genre of our chosen song and video. However we did look at other genres too. We found the simple title of song and artist really effective. This is because there is not much going on so the main focus is on the artist. The covers for Coldplay, Snow Patrol and White Lies are examples of this as it has just the name of the album or song and then the artist. It gives off the importance of the song, that they don't need any decorative detail to help sell the song. The cartoony decoration on some covers we thought looked really attractive to the eye as it catches attention; people would want to look at it closely in more detail. MGMT's and Death Cab for Cutie's album covers are really colourful and match the genre of each of the bands music. We will have to take into consideration of colours and decorations we use that represent our genre. The way the covers do not have pictures of the band is also very effective, it's almost a secret of what the artists look like - or maybe again pictures don't need to be used to sell the CD/DVD. We will incorporate this idea into our cover, as not having a picture of the band on the front makes it look like the Indie genre.
CONSTRUCTION
Here is the footage of our "secret faces". When we went through the song lyrics we felt that the underlying meaning for the song "Little Secrets" was about people keeping secrets, even if they were good secrets. So to give the song a positive message we decided to have teenagers finally admitting secrets so that they can feel free and not embarressed to share them. Our secrets are:
Ex-addict
No longer insecure
Taking anger management
No longer a binge drinker

CONSTRUCTION: ANCILLARY TASK 1

For our first ancillary task we have decided to do a cover for the music videos release as part of a digipak. We have chosen this because out of the other ancillary tasks we had more knowledge in this area and could therefore make this really effective.
Here are some examples of DVD and CD covers we have found and analysed:

Problems we have faced so far:
When filming the “Sparklers” scene, none of our friends would be convinced to mime the words “Higher” to the song so we may have to do that ourselves (Chloe and I).
Keeping the timings to the same time that we have previously predicted, however the changes we have made are even more affective.
The fireworks and the stars scene was recording however does not show up on the camera, so the footage was just pitch black, so we may have to rethink what we can do to replace those scenes.

LETTERS
Our Letter to Richard Cohen, who is the Passion Pit Manager, about permission to use their record for our music video.
Dear Mr. Richard Cohen,
We are students at Edgbarrow School (Crowthorne). One of the subjects we are studying is Media Studies and for our coursework this year we have chosen to make a music video, which is why we are contacting you.
We would like your permission to use the song "Little Secrets" from the Passion Pit album Manners, as we really love the song and would be able to make an affective music video using this piece of music. We could send you the finished copy if you would like to see the final product.Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Laura Smith and Chloe Hoptroff
Here is our letter we wrote to the following people for the acceptance from them to be filmed: Matthew Martin, Mary Davis, David Temple, Jared Adams, Ashley Carter, Rohit Verma, Thomas Quirk and Kirsty Webb.

PLANNING-Music Video
We decided that to help us research that we would watch previous years music videos ranging from the highest and lowest marks to see whats good and whats not. After watching these videos we found certain issues which we should consider when making our own, for example: Continuity and being able to understand the storyline as on some music videos we found it hard to understand what was going on. We need to take this into special consideration as we dont want ours to come across as music just placed onto a video. Especially as ours has a fairly basic storyline with not much structure to it.
PLANNING-Music Video
Scenes for our music video
We like the idea of having the scenes shot using a hand held camera. This will gives us a more natural “home video” tone, which would link to the song as it has an independent tone also. We will have to take into consideration of how steady the camera is held as we don’t want it shaky so the audience feel motion sickness!
The video will start off with shots of feet walking, these people will be in the video through out so we have continuity. We will then have these same people hanging out as a group of friends would in various locations like driving in a car, messing about at the local park/field and nights out together. We may include fake alcoholic drinks; these will be filled up with water/coke so they look real in the video. This will look as natural as possible; just like filming is like a video to document what the friends get up to on a road trip for example.
After looking at other music videos, we have come up with the idea that we will have scenes of fireworks and people with sparklers. This will give a feel good vibe, which would relate to the tone of our chosen song.
We have decided to have some singing in the video, when people have the sparklers in their hands, they will sing “higher, higher, higher, higher”. This, we feel, will be really affective if we use a variety of close-ups, mid-shots and long shots whilst singing. This bit of the song is before the climax of the song where the beat comes back.

The results of our music video idea questionnaire:
We are pleased with the result as we too liked the first idea as well. We think the first idea won because people like a visual aid that keeps them interested when listening to the song, also the evidence in the first questionnaire helps back up our assumption.
MUSIC LYRICS
Our chosen songs lyrics:
When I came down the sun poured into me
I shook them up, the walls came crumbling
My fists kept trembling with these salty wounds
My stolen gold inside the emperor’s tomb
Now baby wait looks like a lovely face
I built this cardboard neighbourhoods disgrace
Who let it said that you're my favourite sphere
Within the confines of such chemistry
It's the way I see everything I need
It's the way to be
Let this be our little secrets
No one needs to know were feeling
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
But I feel alive and I feel it in me
Up and up I keep on coming
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
Higher...
My face blew up at such a casual sight
This miracle is of ecstatic fright
They’ll rush above me to oblivion
Outlining white sidewalks with halogen
Oh have you ever felt so god damn strong
How come it takes some people so damn long?
He tried to squeeze the lemon juice to rain
The citrus drawing out the seasons stains
Watch the basin drain
As your life lines wane
And you can’t explain
As your friends complain
You’ve caused all this pain
And you proudly shame
Your whole families name
Let this be our little secrets
No one need to know were feeling
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
But I feel alive and I feel it in me
Up and up I keep on coming?
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
Mother I can tell what you've been thinking
Staring at the stars on your ceiling
Thinking once there was a power that you were wielding
And now I've hit the mark
Staring at the dark
And I cannot help but ignore
The people staring at my scars
Let this be our little secret

PLANNING-MUSIC VIDEO
Ideas for our video come from all kinds of music videos, here are some examples:
The first 18 seconds of the Nirvana cover of Seasons in the Sun video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO4BF67pvsc
The Kooks - She moves in her own way (without the performance based aspect) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6-QM0_Prp0&feature=channel
The whole of this video is all in narrative with no singing, which is the idea we like best, Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma9I9VBKPiw
This video is a perfect example to what we want to produce. Beyonce does not sing to the lyrics, nor do the events in the video relate to the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpOykqxbh3I
We really like these videos as they can be just random shots that reflect the type of music we are portraying. For example The Kooks song was laid back and there was footage of them on tour and messing about which can be quite interesting to see the band act normal instead of acting like pop stars in the video. The Nirvana one is an effect we would like to create, a home made looking video that is deliberately made to look homemade. the arctic monkeys one it s a great exmple for no singing example. We've decided to have some singing in the video, with a group of people miming the words "higher, higher, higher, higher" when those words come in quite powerfully. There is also some big drum beats that would look good if we had a drum set included in those scenes with someone playing it. We can't wait to see this effect in the final product.

PLANNING-Music Video
Song chosen: Passion Pits - Little Secrets
We have chosen this song because it is an unusual sounding song but we found it really catchy. Also when listening to it we could think of many ideas on how to base a music video on it. It's genre is electro pop/indie music which gives off a fun and enthusiastic vibe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0takBpMWtM
Ideas for our music video:
One idea would make our video narrative based. We like the idea of having no band or artist singing to give it a more life like effect. This will give us advantages of not having to use the same people; we can have a variety of people in our video without affecting the continuity. The narrative will be based on a group of friends doing fun things together. For example, as these holidays are coming up, them out on Halloween, bonfire night with sparklers, hanging out and just generally having fun. Maybe go on a road trip/beach and show a bonfire scene.
Another idea we thought of was a performance based video where we would have group of boys miming along to the song and playing instruments used in the song. We would set them in stereotypical indie backgrounds like: in the school hall on the stage rebelling against school, at a disco where the main singer would be singing to the crowd etc.
The final idea would be to make our video concept based. We feel this would be a challenge as we would have to learn how to make our video cartoon-ised. It would be totally random with shapes, animals and vibrant colours used through-out. It would not include the band to make the video more mystical.
We will now send out a questionnaire with these 3 suggestions on to see which idea is the most popular.

Product Placement
Product placement or embedded marketing is a form of advertisment where branded goods or services are placed in a context, usually via ads such as movies, the storyline of tv shows or new programmes. Now a days music videos can also be shown on music channels based fully on music videos such as 'MTV'. Whereas before only certains h ows such as 'Top Of The Pops' would feature them. This shows the new importance of music videos and how they are almost as important as the song. There are also many other ways for people to view music videos such as the internet. A common site used is youtube.com who recentlet just, lifted a ban of all music videos to be availiable , as artists can loose out on a lot of money this way. However there are also sites such as Yahoo music and VH1.com. Websites are a great way of watching music videos as you are able to choose the exact video that you would like to watch rather than watching the countdown of the charts on a music channel. A more recent way of viewing music videos is downloading them onto an ipod. When ipod released a new form of mp3 player they released an ipod which allowed the consumer to download and watch their chosen music videos from their music store itunes. This gave the artists another way of marketing their product. We have decided that our music video will be veiwed on well known music channels but, not mainstream ones such as MTV or TMF as we would prefer it to be viewed on channels such as E4 which plays independant and up coming bands which suits our music video's theme.

Justin Timberlake- Senrotia
Director-?
Genre- Pop, Latin
The first camera shot is an establishing shot which shows that this music video is set in a hot country as there is sand on the floor and a women standing not wearing a lot of clothes, because it so hot. The instruments used also help to reflect where they are as a cow bell and maracas are used which give the songs a Spanish/ Latin feel. Justin then walks into a little bar where a lot of different camera shots are used to get a full picture of where he is such as close-ups and panning. After a few seconds you recognise that it’s a bar. There is a lot of women on sexual display as they are not wearing much clothing and seem to be playing up to the camera by sitting and standing in certain ways. Justin sit down next a women and looks over to the band playing which you can see are playing the music which is being used for the song. They all look really bored and the music seems very repetitive. As Justin walks up to the stage where the band are playing, there are a few more camera shots almost to remind the audience how boring the bar is at the moment so you can compare it to how lively it will probably be once Justin starts singing. The lyrics start ‘’ On that sunny day didn’t know I’d meet such a beautiful girl, walking down the street’’, at this point the camera cuts to a stereotypical Spanish women with dark skin, dark hair and eyes with a bright red dress on and bright red high heels. The women walks into the middle of the bar and starts dancing, you can see she is making a lot of eye contact with Justin as he is performing on stage and its as if she is dancing for his pleasure. This also means it is pleasing for other men to watch as there is lots of close-ups of her body and face. There is also a lot of close-ups of Justin’s face and body, this works well for him as a singer as a lot of girls find him attractive and by doing close-ups of him throughout the video, they are almost advertising him, meaning hopefully a lot more girls will buy his songs and watch his videos again. The camera then cuts to a shot of Justin dancing with a woman who has a lot of leg showing and this is emphasised by close-ups. Again this is used to entice men into wanting to watch this video. The fact that he’s dancing with a lot of different women also reflects his personality as Justin is known for being a ladies man, and because he is not focusing on one single women it doesn’t seem to make the young girls go off him as it almost shows he likes every type of women making them think that they might have a chance. He also calls them all ‘senorita’ which gives off the impression that he wants them to feel special as he also says ‘’ She deserves a crown, now hasn’t it been found?’’ this also helps him to be portrayed as man who respects women and just wants them all to feel special rather then a man with only one motive. This is again reinforced by his lyrics as a minute later the heavy beat stops and he sings ‘’ When I look into your eyes, I see something that money cant buy’’, that fact that the heavy beat stops gives it a more soft tone and more meaningful it also shows he has a lot of charm and knows how to treat a lady, making girls like him more and therefore he is more likely to get better sales. There is then camera shots back at the pub with him performing you can see there is now a lot more people in the middle dancing and having fun. There is also a close- up of Justin having just looked at the all the people up dancing, having un he smiles and laughs showing he has achieved what he wanted to which is a much more lively place with men and women mixing together. The ending of this song is very appealing as he gets the other people involved by making the men sing ‘ It feels like something’s heating up, can I leave wit chu?’’ and the women ‘’ I don’t know what im thinking bout really leaving wit chu’’ you can tell that when he sings this particular song live the ending would be really good as it would involve his audience and it also makes them all come together which is the main reason of this song, getting men and women together. His last words are ‘Gentlemen goodnight, Ladies….Good morning’’ which is quite humorous and again shows how he gets on well with women.
